Why do some Americans think their interventions are heroic?

Same reason every country does - mixture of propaganda, willful ignorance and an overpowering desire to not admit any wrong doing. It's not like the citizens of NAZI Germany or Communist Russia were sitting around saying "Ya, we're awful people, pure evil to the core! Hazza!" They were saying "We're helping those poor backward and oppressed people!".
