How did the word "apocalypse" come to mean "total devastation" when it translates literally as "revelation"?

I don't know about this particular bit of history, but it might be part of the early church's campaign to wipe out its competitors. Or maybe just an eventual side effect. They certainly did a lot to demonize and eradicate groups who worked with different 'revelations', both within and outside of Christianity.
